Symptoms need to occur for most of the day, every day for over 2 weeks and have an impact on work, social life and family life for a diagnosis of depression to be given
Unipolar depression is twice as common in women as men. It usually occurs from the age of 30-40 and peaks at the ages of 50-60.
Depression decreases life expectancy – thought to be due to associated illness
Symptoms include: Extreme lethargy (tiredness); Disturbed sleep; Permanent anxiety; Irritability; Feelings of despair; Feelings of hopelessness; Self doubt; Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities; Loss of sex drive; irrational fears; Loss of appetite and weight loss; Suicidal thoughts ; Difficulty making decisions; Headaches; Loss of concentration
